A true description of God?

by neonmeatdreams @ 2008-01-18 - 14:21:52

"a full understanding of God is beyond human beings" Guru Nanak Dev founder of sikhism
He also teaches a non-anthropomorphic concept of God, to the extent that one can interpret God as the Universe itself.
In the 'Guru Granth Sahib', the Sikh holy book, God is presented as genderless.

I find this fascinating and extremely close to my own personal beliefs about the nature of God or what god may be.

Any other opinions...???

muslims believe the same - understanding god is beyond our comprehension. the real issue is you can't prove there is a god and you can't prove that there isn't.

I tend to agree with Dostoevsky who said: 'Without God all things are possible' and also with Nietzsche who wrote extensively about organised religion.

Personally I am not a fan of organised religion and I would emphasise the importance of a personal spirituality. Whether this is a belief in science or a blind faith in a supreme being or simply a belief that there is nothing. I would say these are all valid opinions.

Interesting as it may be...there are more important things to worry about I think.

What could be more important than the very universe and existence itself...well maybe Jimi Hendrix...

You've just sparked an interesting discussion between my friend and I about God and gender. We're Christian, so we believe that if all people are made in the image of God, then God must be both male and female, rather than neither. Not sure why, traditionally, Christians call God "He" - I think in Greek (the New Testament language) the words for "man" and "person" are the same, rather like they used to be interchangeable in English - that probably confused people.

God bless, Jenni xx

I don't think it matters what gender GOD is. The Christian view (as I was taught)is that god is perfection, truth, goodness and love etc. He (it/she) is perfection of all things. In a sense God, as it says in the original post is existence itself. The difference between the major religions is how this God interacts (if at all) with his creation. To a certain degree most of us believe that there is - hence praying, belief in miracles and (more commonly) blame.
Sure, enjoying life is important - the Catholic Catechism's answer to the question (to be learnt by under 10 year olds) Why did God make you? is God made me to Love him, to Serve Him and be happy with him in this world and forever in the next. Don't get me wrong, i'm not a bible puncher, but that sounds pretty OK. Then again, if you look closely at most religion's core beliefs, there's always a nugget of truth.

Nice comment thanks. I would agree that all religions have some element of truth and alot of common goals but just differing approaches to reaching them.
